Why it may be time to rethink your organisational change programs
The adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same" rings true for organisational change. A 2023 Gartner study reveals that many organisational change efforts still fall short, with half failing to achieve their goals. This raises the question: How does change truly take root in large, established organisations?

The challenge of personal accountability
Over my 30-year career in organisational change, I’ve found that a major reason for the lack of success is people not taking enough personal ownership of change – everyone else needs to change, not them.

For organisational change to take hold, it requires a critical mass of individuals who embrace personal accountability, meaning they recognise they are both part of the problem and the solution. My organisational change talks, short courses and change training sessions are designed to cultivate this mindset, equipping individuals to drive organisational change by taking personal ownership and avoiding the tendency to wait for others to act or assign blame.

The proliferation of myths

We’ve been fed outdated myths about organisational change for decades. It’s time to rethink these old ideas and set the record straight. Let’s debunk these myths and discover the real truths that drive meaningful organisational change.
Myth: People resist change
Debunk: People generally embrace change when it’s connected to their desire for growth and improvement. By aligning organisational change initiatives with these intrinsic motivations, we make the process smoother and more natural.
Myth: Change = an initiative
Debunk: Organisational change is not about implementing a program; it thrives in environments that promote ongoing dialogue and continuous learning. When organisations create a culture where these elements are integral to daily life, they maintain higher levels of engagement and accountability. Programs alone cannot sustain change without a supportive culture that encourages ongoing development and change.
Myth: Change takes time
Debunk: Organisational change doesn’t have to be slow. Immersion can accelerate the process, often leading to breakthroughs in just one month. By engaging deeply and learning naturally, significant progress can be made quickly.
Myth: Culture change = behaviour change
Debunk: Organsational culture change isn't just about adjusting behaviours - it's about reshaping the core beliefs that drive those behaviours. True culture change means challenging and redefining the fundamental assumptions that shape how people experience and respond to change, ensuring that the shift is deep and enduring rather than just superficial.
